Happy New Year everyone!

As I’m sure you know, my humble hometown of Hull is this year’s City of Culture. Considering we usually have to wait until September for the fun to begin here - Freedom Festival is usually a good time, followed by Hull Fair - I’m pretty excited about all of the events that will be taking place in Hull over the next year. In celebration, I’ve decided that the first Friday Finds of every month this year will be dedicated to all of the events taking place that month. To start with, here is everything happening this January in Hull.

6 - 7: Made In Hull

Chances are you’ve gone to visit this week’s Made In Hull light show already, but if you haven’t tonight and tomorrow night will be your last chances! Over 150,000 visitors have gone to see the installations at Victoria Square and The Deep, so don’t be the only one to miss out. I’m actually going tonight so I’ll make sure to add some pictures once I get back.

7: Easy Skankin

This Saturday, The New Adelphi Club is hosting their classic reggae night where you can hear ska, roots, rock steady, dub and dancehall. Entry costs £3 on the door and please be polite because I used to do that job there!

20: Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club

This event at Hull City Hall is sort of our Live at The Apollo as four professional comedians come together to make us laugh. Jason Manford, John Bishop and Sarah Millican all came the Hull’s Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club before they became ultra-famous so you never know who you could see.

23 - 29: Moonlight Drive-In Cinema

Throughout the last week of January, a Moonlight Drive-In Cinema will be hosted at the Lightstream Stadium. Tickets cost £25 per car and some movie highlights include Grease, Dirty Dancing, The Lion King and Jurassic World.

Hull Charters

As Hull’s first major exhibition of the year, this is a must even if you’re not particularly interested in old pieces of paper. Imagine being able to tell the grandkids you saw the first Hull Charter from 1299? Many of the documents displayed are the very basis upon which our city was built upon. Entry is free and the exhibition will remain open to the public until February 24.

Lines of Thought

This event is particularly exciting as the British Museum Touring Exhibition are displaying works by Michelangelo, Matisse and Rembrandt throughout January in Hull University until February 28.

Bowhead

Until March 19, The Maritime Museum will be hosting an incredible audiovisual display of a Greenland Right Whale - aka a Bowhead. Entry is free and the museum is open Monday to Saturday, 10am-5pm and 1.40pm-4.30pm on Sundays.

There doesn’t really seem to be too much to catch this January in Hull, which is good as it’s exam season and it is currently raining for the sixth straight hour. Still, let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to mention and if you’ve been to any of the events above yet. I’m starting tonight so I’m definitely excited!
