Rustic decor is very big at the moment. Pretty much any new bar or restaurant that opens is filled with uncovered lightbulbs, wood effect walls and exposed brick. A lot of people are adopting this rustic style in their homes as well. Exposing brick walls is expensive and a lot of that vintage furniture you see caa be pretty pricey as well. But one way that you can introduce some of these design elements into your home without spending too much money is using wood or wood effect materials. These are just some of the ways you can do it.

Build Your Own Furniture

Instead of buying expensive furniture, you can just make your own. There are plenty of great online tutorials that show you how you can build your own furniture, even if you aren’t great with your hands. If you’re trying to do things extra cheap, there are so many great pieces of furniture you can make from reclaimed wood, particularly pallet crates. The only problem with this is, you can’t always be sure of the quality, so make sure you check it carefully. If you’re building something that’s going to take a lot of weight like a chair, it’s probably best to buy some wood from somewhere like George Hill Timber so you can be sure of the quality and you don’t have to worry about the furniture collapsing on you.

Wooden Floorboards

There’s nothing better than some traditional wooden flooring to give your home that great rustic aesthetic. The best thing is, it’s already there for you in most houses. Just take up the carpets and you can uncover it. It’s not likely to be in a great state if it’s been under the carpets for years but you can bring it back to life with a bit of hard work. Get an electric sander and take all of the dirt and scratches out and then you can varnish it again. It’ll take a while but it’s worth it for the end result.

Wooden Panelling

Exposed brick is great for a feature wall but it’s a messy and expensive job. If you’re still looking for a great feature wall idea that’s a lot easier, wooden panelling is a great alternative. You can easily screw wooden panels into the wall to completely revamp the way that it looks. You’ve got a great opportunity to use reclaimed wood which maintains the rustic character. Find a load of old pieces and start patchworking them together into a design, then simply screw them into the wall and you’re good to go.

Wooden Signs

Wall art is a great way to make those boring walls a little more exciting. You could go for some frames but if you’re looking for a rustic aesthetic, old wooden signs are perfect. They’re in high demand at the moment because bars and restaurants love them so you can find loads of them in antique shops or charity shops.

Wood is a timeless material that’s always going to look great, and it’s a far cheaper way of creating great rustic decor.
