One of the things that a lot of people struggle with is the fact that they often feel as though they don’t have a real sense of their home’s style. They want to decorate their home and give it some personality, but they just don’t seem to know how to go about making that happen. Well, if you want to make your home feel a little bit more distinct then you’ve got figure out the style that you want it to have, and few styles bring more charm and excitement into a home than the bohemian style.

This classic school of design draws a great deal of inspiration from eastern countries as well as the counterculture at the height of the sixties. However, there’s a very fine line between a beautifully bohemian home and a complete and total mess. With that in mind, here are some simple pieces of advice to follow to help you embrace la vie bohème in your home!

Be Bold

If you’re going to try and bring a sense of bohemian style into your home, then you need to be willing to commit to it. Unlike many other styles, it’s not really the kind of thing that you can just sort of place here. You’ve got to be willing to take some risks with the design of your home if you really want that loose, laid back style that makes bohemian homes so inviting and relaxing. Choose bright colours and sumptuous fabrics. Don’t be afraid to embrace luxury in a significant way. Plenty of cushions and blankets should cover your home, making any room the kind of place you’d be more than happy to lounge around and relax inside no matter what.

Go Vintage

The last thing you want is for your bohemian decor to be constantly coming up against overly modern trappings. If you’ve got furniture that is built in modern or industrial designs, then it’s just going to clash horribly with the style that you’re trying to create in your home. Instead, try to stay on the lookout for vintage items that are more likely to fit with the bohemian aesthetic. Bedroom furniture made from rich, dark wood fits perfectly with the sense of comfort and luxury that bohemian designs can create so effectively. Not only that ornate furniture is going to add to the bold colours and patterns in your decor in a subtle, yet incredibly effective way.

Embrace Patterns

Speaking of patterns, there are few things more classically bohemian than loud, bold, daring patterns. Many of the patterns that you’ll want to use in decorations, cushions and curtains will have eastern influences, particularly from places like Morocco. Markets are often a fantastic place to find these kinds of things since they’re often incredibly authentic without being overly expensive. Don’t be afraid to look around in thrift stores and other second-hand places. You’ll often find some incredibly exciting items that will fit with the style you’re creating wonderfully while still being a serious bargain. The exact kinds of patterns that you want in your home are, of course, going to be a matter of personal preference and expressions, but there are certainly specific patterns that fit better with the general bohemian style better than other.

Forget Symmetry

There are a lot of interior design styles that specifically focus on neatness, minimalism, and symmetry. When it comes to bringing in that boho-chic, you need to throw all that right out of the window! The bohemian lifestyle is about being carefree and living however you want, so don’t feel caged in by more typical design ideas. Things in our home should almost look like they were placed there without thinking. (Even if you know exactly where everything should go.) Don’t be afraid to experiment with how things are laid out so that you can discover new things. Forget clean lines and neatness, embrace a little bit of chaos in your home’s design. Of course, you probably don’t want to go too far since you do still want your home to be a space that you can comfortably live in!

The bohemian style isn’t necessarily for everyone. A lot of people simply won’t be able to enjoy the carefree attitude that it brings with it and will find themselves needing just a little bit more order in their life. But if you can embrace the sense of freedom that this style brings to your home, then you may well have found your perfect style.
