Do You Have a Wine Face?
We are what we eat (and drink). Everything we digest somehow manifests on our skin and physical appearance. We all know what carbs and sugars do to our skin and how blemishes easily pop out. However, alcohol too can change the appearance of our skin and a lot of people have the so-called “wine face”. If your face started looking different and it significantly transformed, you might want to reconsider your late evenings filled with tasty wines for relaxation.
What is a Wine Face?
A wine face represents the changes in your face due to consumption of wine. Obviously. However, you might not even like wine but you still notice the wine face creeping in and that is because not only wine is to blame for this, but all alcoholic beverages in general. The reason why this condition got its name is because characteristics of a wine face most commonly occur with women who like to enjoy a glass or two of wine every day. The alcohol in wine triggers the ageing characteristics, but any kind of alcohol can do exactly the same. So try not to bathe in it. :)
Typical Symptoms
The most typical changes that happen on our skin are around the eyes. The lines between the eyes become more prominent and the whole area between the eyes becomes red. The eyelids become droopy while the pores become bigger. Overall, skin is dehydrated, cheeks get feathery lines, they become reddish, as well as the nose, and the nasolabial folds become deeper.
Why This Happens?
Alcohol is responsible for the obvious changes on your skin. It dehydrates the skin which automatically worsens the look of those fine lines and wrinkles you have. To make things worse, alcohol is rich in sugar, which can damage the protein collagen. That protein is vital for keeping the skin elastic and as soon as it gets interrupted by sugar, it causes droopy eyelids and enlarged pores on your face.
Face mapping can help you understand this condition better. According to it, the space between the eyes is linked with the liver – liver is our body’s filter and if it gets a bit more alcohol to filter, it will have to alert you somehow that it needs help. Many people whose liver struggles with processing alcohol have the prominent lines and redness in the mentioned area.
Another not so obvious downside of alcohol is that it inhibits the action of enzymes that our bodies use in order to fight inflammations on our skin, i.e. only a few glasses of wine or any other alcoholic beverage is enough to allow the inflammatory process to start and result in red cheeks and nose. The redness that occurs due to alcohol consumption is also linked to the dilation of delicate capillaries of the cheeks and nose, meaning, more blood is drawn to the surface of the skin.
How to Deal With This?
All this might sound horrible and every wine lover might freak out, but the wine face isn’t as bad and scary as it sounds. There is a very simple solution: moderate the consumption of alcohol. Take a short break from alcohol and you will notice that the deeply ageing nasolabial lines are lifting up and the skin is becoming lighter. Use this period to rehydrate your liver and your skin. However, if you believe that an occasional glass of wine will help you deal with the harsh life, there is another great solution for a better skin. Experts from clinic for cosmetic surgery in Perth recommend dealing with wrinkles and redness through non-invasive cosmetic treatments. A little bit of laser treatments here and there can better your complexion.
The symptoms of a wine face are quite obvious and as soon as you notice them, take a break. There is always the option of cosmetic surgery, but you have to learn how to be moderate. Don’t abuse alcohol and if you still wish to enjoy some wine, stick to one with low sugar content such as Pinot noir, Merlot or Sauvignon blanc.
