Are you planning a long trip abroad? Like, several weeks to a couple of months long? Don’t panic, while it might seem a bit daunting at first, preparing for a lengthy adventure doesn’t have to be a cumbersome task, it simply requires some strategizing, strategic thinking, and a dash of research.

Besides, you shouldn’t allow anything to spoil the fun and excitement of traveling across the globe towards the unexplored wonders that lay ahead. So, here to help you prepare for your extended holiday are the essential packing tips for all of you long-term vacationers. We are so jealous of you!

Research the destination thoroughly

Knowledge is power. That sounded so fervent, and while you’re not preparing for an epic battle or studying for the finals, you do want to do your research well before the departure day so that you can brainstorm your perfect wardrobe, make a detailed list of all travel essentials, and so that you can gather all of the necessary documentation that will allow you to enjoy some unimpeded rest and relaxation abroad.

So, let the destination dictate your wardrobe. Depending on the forecast and your itinerary, you want to start by packing one of each (that’s one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, one dress, etc.), only packing underwear and socks in bulk. This will allow you to keep a clutter-free, organized suitcase. Only when you’ve created your essential wardrobe, you can go ahead and fill out the remaining space with complementary garments.

You don’t really need that much clothes

Speaking of your wardrobe, you don’t need a different dress for every night you spend abroad. The truth is you’re probably going to spend most of your time in comfy clothes while exploring the city or lounging in a beachside bar, so why go through the fuss of packing everything from your closet?

The key here is to take the stress out of the packing process by keeping your wardrobe as minimal as possible, only packing according to your itinerary. So if you’ve got hiking planned, don’t forget to bring your hiking boots, and if a city exploration tour is in your schedule, then a simple change of clothes for every couple of days will suffice. And don’t worry yourself too much about whether you should bring this sweater or that jacket – if it gets cold, make sure you have one to two warm garments and that’s it.

Plan your itinerary and pack accordingly

If you’re going on a lengthy trip abroad, you are bound to have plenty of exciting adventures planned out, from outdoor camping trips, to exploring the urban nightlife, all the way to visiting different corners of the country. So naturally, you want your travel necessities to correspond to every activity.

So for instance, if you’re visiting Australia, there are endless exploration routes to take and adventures to experience.

You can, therefore, go camping across the country or go on one of the many cruises from Sydney, but every occasion will require a unique ensemble. Needless to say, you don’t want to hit a camping trip in a pair of stilettos, but you also don’t want to attend a cruise party in your hiking boots – so plan ahead, and pack smart.

Don’t forget your trusty gadgets

Technology has become an inextricable part of the modern lifestyle, and there is no reason why you should take on a lengthy vacation without bringing all of your essential electronics with you. Sure, you might want to get away from the emails and cowering apps, but those can be easily deactivated while you’re on vacation.

You want to use your trusty gadgets to maintain a realistic schedule and simply make your time abroad comfortable, enjoyable, and stress-free. After all, why risk getting lost in the middle of nowhere or circling the same block for an hour when you can simply turn to your smartphone for guidance? That said, don’t forget an electrical adapter, and bring a portable charger as well, just in case.

Taking a prolonged vacation is the dream of every modern family looking to unwind and change the scenery for a while. While you might have been under the impression that planning such an escapade will require you to bring everything you own with you, the truth is that you only need a sound plan and small set of travel essentials to make your adventure as enjoyable as possible.
