Every year, I am asked what my New Years resolution(s) will be. And I usually reply with “I have no idea because I will never keep them longer than about five days”. I can’t even remember what last year’s were. However this year, I’ve decided to create some with structure that are some what feasible.
1. I am actually going to use the cameras I own. Easiest resolution first. I haven’t touched my Lumix or either of my Fujifilms in months. I think I have used them twice - if that - all year. I always use my iPhone which is fine but as I will probably be writing for more online publications in the following year and want to continue and thoroughly improve this blog, the photos I take should be much better quality.
2. I am going to work on this blog. As I’m studying digital media journalism and Interactive media, the way in which people find and perceive my online work should be a hell of a lot easier and more positive than so far. Although I don’t get negative feedback, I do get very little positive feedback. Or feedback online at all. I think this is because I haven’t created a particular genre in which I can place myself for any particular audience. Instead, I have continually settled with simply publishing my miscellaneous, mediocre writing and photographs which can only really be linked to me. As no one at this time is interested in a blog which does nothing more than detail me as a person amongst millions of other blogs with more established intentions I can understand why I’m lucky to get 300 views a month. So this year I’m going to find my niche. I also would like to be a lot more flexible on what I’m willing to publish about myself and my life on here. I can be an interesting person, honest, I’m just uncomfortable about sharing.
3. I am going to think about my future. So far in my life I have been safely tucked away inside the education system. The only choices so far that I have had to make regarding my future in the last five years are which A levels to take (philosophy, history, English language and psychology - what good ideas they were) and which university to go to. Lincoln or Leeds Met to study English and History? No. Art and Design School. Journalism. Thankfully, (or because of those choices) I’m a firm believer in “everything happens for a reason” so those choices were right for my life. However, after May I will no longer be able to swan about telling people I’m a student and that’s why I have money and time. I will either have dole money and all the time in the world to sit in coffee shops with my MacBook being a cliche, or I will have no money and no time presumably working at Asda. The latter sounds awful and my mum will be disappointed in me if I succeed in the former. So I have to find employment in journalism. And not just people hiring me to do gig photography or in waitressing again. I guess. I’ll try. The future scares me.
4. I am going to be more positive. Without going into too much detail, I have a tendency to focus on the negative and be incredibly pessimistic about everything. Ever. My writing at times during the last year has bordered upon misanthropy. I am moody, hence the name. Though I am not a peach. So if I’m not a peach then I don’t have to be moody either. I just drank a lot of wine, can you tell? This year, I am going to keep a journal - not a diary - full of positive things and aim to make every aspect of my life more healthy. Including on here. Although, I don’t know how to be funny at all about the good in life. Tricky.
(I wrote this a week before New Year’s knowing that on the actually day I would probably be incapacitated. I’m not but now I can use this valuable time to eat all the food ever in the world. Happy New Year!)
