Most of the time, we love summer nights in the UK. It’s the only time we get to sit outside in the garden with a glass of wine late into the evening or while away the hours in a country pub garden with a pint and a packet of crisps. Alas, when it comes to bedtime, those summer nights can be a nightmare! That is because, as we all know, getting to sleep when it’s hot and muggy can be a challenge. Still, there are some things you can do to ease your transition into the land of nod. Read on to find out what they are.
Cool Off
First of all, when the temperature starts to sore it’s a good idea to get yourself into a good summer routine. This means include some time to cool off and clean up before you get into bed. This can help you get to sleep easier because it washes away the sweat and dirt, as well as lowering your body temperature, which makes it easier to nod off.
Of course, you need to be careful about how hot or cold you have your shower in the evening though. As no one wants a hot shower when they are already boiling. But if it’s too cold it will wake you up and can make you feel even hotter when you get out. That is why it’s best to go for a warm temperature of about 20-25 degrees centigrade.
Summer-Ready Bedding
The next thing you can do to help you get off to sleep easier when the weather is hot is to look at your bedding situation. Far too many people use the same duvet and cover all year round, but this is certainly not a recipe for success in the heat.
Instead, make sure that you change your heavy winter duvet out for a lower tog one like this one you can get from Richard Haworth. Also, ditch any thick or fluffy duvets covers and sheets and go for light, pure cotton.
In particular, look out for seersucker fabrics. As not only are they light and airy and give a beach house look to your room in the summer but they also don’t need much ironing. So they can make your life a lot easier too.
Fans!
Obviously, another way of ensuring that you keep your cool when it’s bedtime in the summer is to get a fan. There are a lot of different ones out there on the market now, so don’t think that you are limited to those tacky white office fans that everyone has at work.
You can get stand fans in retro designs, or you can even push the boat out completely and go for a high-tech air purifier and cooler.
PJ Power
Lastly, you can help yourself get a better night’s sleep in the warm weather by choosing you nightwear carefully. Loose cotton pyjamas and nightwear can help keep you cool while wicking away any sweat your body produces during the night.
